Arthur C. Shorthouse RBSA Oil Portrait Pretty Lady
We are offering this very attractive oil on canvas portrait of a young lady by the artist Arthur Charles Shorthouse RBSA, who has signed the portrait in the lower right hand corner and dated it 28th November, 1928. The subject has fair or light brown curly hair, cut in the short bob style, prevalent in the twenties and thirties. She has grey/blue eyes and a pleasant smile and an almost ethereal quality..
Arthur Charles Shorthouse was born on 30th April, 1870, the son of a butcher. and the youngest of 5 children. He studied at the Birmingham School of Art and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. He was in his youth a lithographer and belonged to the union, but became a painter in oils and watercolour of portraits and landscapes. He exhibited from 1892-1950 over 100 works at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artist, and 5 at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions in 1898, 1913, 1927 and 1932.
He was elected ARBSA in 1919 and full Member (RBSA) in 1928. He has an exhibition at the Ruskin Gallery in Birmingham in 1928 of portraits, character studies and landscapes. He served as President of the Birmingham Art Circle in 1933 and was Honorary Curator of the Birmingham Society of Artists for some years.
He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and the Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters. Exmples of his work may be found in Birmingham Museum and online on google. Auction results are on the usual sites.
He married Florence Amelia Guest (1872-1950), the daughter of a cattle dealer in 1897 and they had one son Neville Francis Shorthouse, born 1899. They lived in Biringham and its environs for their whole lives, Florence died in 1950, and Arthur followed her in 1953. They are both buried in Warstone Lane Cemetery in Birmingham.
The portrait has been newly framed in a 3 3/4" ornate gilt frame. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and ready to hang in the purchaser's home.

Frame size: 27" x 23" - 68.5cm x 58.45cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good. There is no damage to the canvas, which is clean and taut and there is no craquelure or stretcher marks. The frame is new.
