Art Nouveau Silver Plate Teapot, J. Sherwood
This is a wonderfully stylish Art Nouveau Silver Plate Teapot with a sweeping patented Ever-Cool Handle giving it a form reminiscent of a round Aladdin's lamp. The lid is set at the back of the body and has a shell thumb rest.
The teapot is made in Birmingham by J. Sherwood & Sons and dates to the period from around 1890 to around 1910. Founded by John Sherwood around 1839, the firm were one of the best known 19th century producers of electroplate. Around 1850 John was joined by his two sons with a third generation of the family joining around 1870 and a fourth generation in the 1890s. The firm ceased trading around the start of the First World War.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just a slight amount of tea staining to the interior. The hinge on the lid is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teapot measures 25.2cm / 9.9ins from spout to handle, 14.6cm / 5.7ins across the body and stands 12.6cm / 4.9ins high. It weighs 573g / 20.2oz.
The underside of the base is comprehensively marked. It has the J S & S in a shield mark for John Sherwood & Sons along with their famous beaver trademark. It has EPNS for silver plate and a letter A to show that it is their best grade of plate. Below this is Made In England and then Ever-Cool Handle along with the patent number 26853.
