Art Nouveau Silver Basket, J. Dixon & Sons, 1897
Here we have a beautiful late Victorian Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Bread Basket. The basket is navette shaped with an oval base and raised ends. The body has embossed swags at each end and geometric piercings in two double rows running along its length. The body stands on four lily pad feet and the sweeping Nouveau handles curl upwards and over from the two end feet.
The basket was made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths James Dixon & Sons and dates to 1897. With a history dating back to around 1806 when it was a partnership between James Dixon and Thomas Smith, James Dixon & Sons was one of Sheffield's foremost silversmiths and electroplaters, particularly noted for their relationship with designer Dr Christopher Dresser whose groundbreaking silver plate teapot designs for the company are still being reproduced today. They were highly successful and remained in business up until the mid 1980s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, just two truly tiny splits in the top rim and a slight rock from end to end when placed on a hard flat surface plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bread basket measures 26cm / 10.2ins from handle to handle, 10.7cm / 4.2ins across the body and stands 8.7cm / 3.4ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 249.1g / 8.79oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter e for 1897 and the J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the basket.
