Art Deco Uranium Glass Vase, Libochovice, c.1930s
Here we have a striking Art Deco Uranium Glass Vase from the 1930s. The vase has an octagonal base from which rises a fluted trumpet shaped body supported by two stylised fantail pigeons or doves with distinctively Deco tails.
Being made of uranium glass, the vase fluoresces under ultraviolet light. Uranium glass is made by adding a small, non dangerous, amount of uranium oxide to the glass mix before melting. It was first developed in the 19th century but reached its peak of popularity in the early 20th century. After the Second World War supplies of uranium became very restricted and the glowing glass was no longer available for sale.
The vase was made in what was then Czechoslovakia, now the Czech Republic, by Libochovice Glass in the 1930s. It is pattern number 1584 in the Libochovice catalogue. The company was founded in 1912 by Josef Feigl and Ladislav Morávek in the town of the same name, which at that point was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Building on the long established traditions of Bohemian glass they quickly built a reputation for daring contemporary design, particularly in the Art Deco period between the wars. In 1965 Libochovice Glass was absorbed into the Sklo Union group.
Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase stands 15.2cm / 6ins high and is 6.2cm / 2.4ins in diameter. It weighs 231.4g / 8.2oz.
As is normally the case with Libochovice Glass, there is no stamped or etched makers' mark on the vase.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
