Art Deco Silver Plated Tea & Coffee Service, WMF
This is a wonderfully stylish Art Deco Silver Plate Tea & Coffee service made by WMF in the 1920s. The service has a teapot, a coffee pot, a milk or cream jug and a lidded sugar bowl all sat on a tray. The service is made by WMF (Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik), one of the most famous and successful producers of domestic metalware in the world.
The four pieces of the service are fourteen sided with angular straight panels and an oval top. The tray is rectangular with rounded corners and narrow panelled sections on each side. The teapot and coffee pot have woven cane over the handles to make them comfortable to hold when the pots are hot.
Condition is very good with no plate loss and just one very small ding on the side of the teapot. There is some surface scratching to the tray, which is inevitable with the other pieces being regularly lifted off and on to it.
The tray is 40cm / 15.8" x 23.5cm / 9.2". The teapot is 23cm / 9" from spout to handle, 9.3cm / 3.6" across the body and 16cm / 6.2" to the top of the finial. The coffee pot is 24cm / 9.25" from spout to handle, 8cm / 3.2" across the body and 19.8cm / 7.7" to the top of the finial. The cream jug is 12cm / 4.75" from lip to handle, 5.5cm / 2.25" across the body and 9cm / 3.5" high. The sugar bowl is 15.4cm / 6" from handle to handle, 8.2cm / 3.2" across the body and 8.7cm / 3.5" high.
The marks on the bottom are the famous ostrich for WMF, in this case in a diamond over WMF and G (for Geislingen, WMF's location) in a fully hatched beehive shape which gives us a date of between 1910 and 1930. Below this is M.Pl. which stands for Messing Plaquiert, German for plated brass. Each of the four pieces has their capacity also marked: Teapot - 1,0l Coffee Pot - 1,1l Cream Jug - 0,25l Sugar Bowl - 0,35l.
