Art Deco 'Pandora's Box' Glass Biscuit Barrel
A beautiful peach coloured Art Deco biscuit jar often found being offered as a vase without its lid and nobody can deny that as such they are very decorative items, however here is an example in its entirety as intended as the ‘Pandora’s Box’ lidded biscuit jar pattern no. 2544 by the English glass makers Sowerby. Clear and frosted square panels, with a sloped and four double rib lid, the jar section with canted double rib corners on a sloped pedestal base. Each side depicts a female in relief with fabulous detailing. Free from any damage.
BIO
John Sowerby established a glass house in 1847 in Gateshead, England to manufacture pressed glass only. His son George took over the firm after his death in 1879 and by 1882 the factory had become the largest manufacturer of pressed glass in England. Just like Bagley, for example, Sowerby embraced the Art Deco style and introduced some of the most beautifully designed examples of press moulded glass of the period, and this piece is no exception… Its square-angular shape of this piece allows flat surfaces & space upon the glass, onto which a beautifully moulded lady (Pandora) is depicted on each of the four side panels. She is shown to be kneeling in contemplation as if about to ‘open Pandora’s box’ as described in classical Greek mythology, in which she was considered to be the first woman on Earth…Sowerby, pulled-out all of the stops when they crafted this piece.
The jar weighs 2.5 kg
Height = 20 cm (8")
Width = 17.5 cm (7")
Depth = 17.5 cm (7")
