Art Deco Geometric Enamelled Ladies Powder Compact
Early 1930's Art Deco Richard Hudnut Du Barry powder compact with remnants of the fine texture face powder in two tones of bright red. Du Barry scent is still detectable despite the age of the powder. The back of the compact is engine turned with lovely detailing. To the front is a geometric decoration with black, cream and pink enamels. The inside mirror is aged with some age, the rest of the compact is in what can only be described as almost mint condition, the clasp is also very good.
BIO
Richard Hudnut died at Juan-les-Pins, France, at the age of 73 (June 2, 1855 – October 30, 1928)
Around 1880, a small pharmacy was opened in New York city and sold perfumes, cosmetics and assorted toiletries. Richard Hudnut, the son of the proprietor of the shop, became the first American selling luxury perfume presentations, (though some of these were created in France) in an elegant shop which was directly influenced by the French and European perfumeries.Richard Hudnut’s legacy is based on his creation of perfumery and cosmetics of notable quality, which were presented in distinctively decorated, and packaged containers. These beautiful and artful containers made Richard Hudnut perfumes and cosmetics still very collectable today.
The Richard Hudnut business was then acquired by William R. Warner & Co which, in 1955, became the Warner-Lambert Pharmaceuticals Co., which was later acquired by Parke-Davis in 1970, which, in turn, was merged into Pfizer in 2000.
