Art Deco Cut Glass Powder Bowl, H. Matthews, 1930
Here we have a beautiful Art Deco Cut Glass Powder Bowl with a Sterling Silver and Guilloche Enamel Lid. The bowl is a flattened sphere with a star cut base and body. The circular lid is Sterling Silver with a pale blue guilloche enamel top. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The powder bowl was made in Birmingham by Henry Matthews and dates to 1930 at the height of the Art Deco era. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until the early 1930s.
Condition is extremely good with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and critically no damage to the enamel top. There is just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 9.8cm / 3.8ins in diameter and stands 4.3cm / 1.7ins high. The lid by itself weighs in at a very respectable 33.1g / 1.17oz and all in the powder bowl weighs 275g / 9.7oz.
The hallmarks, on the side rim of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter F for 1930 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bowl.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
