Description:
This is a fine quality antique English Victorian oak stationery box, circa 1900, in excellent original condition. Ideal for storing stationery and letters on an office desk / writing table. The exterior of the stationery cabinet comprises a moulded hinged lid, decorated with scribe moulding and leaf scribe carvings in all four corners. The lid opens to reveal a transparent window which housed the original calendars. The calendar window re-order paper instructions are still present, which read “Fuller & Jackson, 6 Grocers’ Hall Court, Poultry, London, E. C. Price 4d per set, per post 4½d”. The front, which is also hinged, retains the original working brass lever lock (with working key), folds down to reveal the interior comprising the original two cut glass ink wells and pen aperture tray on the top level. Below, are six pigeon holes / letter trays, of various widths, for storing mail and paperwork. Further below are two oak-lined drawers retaining the original brass drop handles ideal for storing smaller items. The stationery box sits on a flush, straight plinth.
This Victorian stationery box is a truly classic example from the late Victorian / Edwardian period in England and displays an attractive, utilitarian aesthetic. It is rare to see an example, which not only is in excellent condition, but also completely original.
The letter box boasts a mellow golden oak colour. As the Victorian writing box boasts the original polish, it has a lovely mellow colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This truly is a beautiful item with quality construction and is original throughout. It is rare to see one in such good condition.
This oak writing box would look superb in a variety of rooms from the office to the bedroom. The oak writing box would certainly grace any home or office and is a great investment, as it’s extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely antique piece.
