Antique Stationery Cabinet / Writing Box c.1880
An absolute stunner of a writing box for the discerning, wanting a grand piece with presence. Made from my favourite timber, Burr Walnut, with a wonderful nutty rich cognac colouring and it's highly decorative grain or Burl. Either side is fitted with a thick solid cast brass carrying handle, complimenting the brass escutcheon to the front, which comes with a working key. All the brass fittings lock, piano hinges and the like have all been professionally re-polished to gleam.
The lid lifts to reveal a leather lined interior fitted to accommodate various desk accessories, pens, pencils and the like (the ones you see in the lid are included in the sale). Above the lock the original makers plaque is revealed, engraved and inked by the top quality retailer, Parkins & Gotto of Oxford Street, London.
The double action front comes down which also releases the sprung inkwell and pen compartments, automatically coming out when the front comes down and automatically pushed back when this front is returned.
This section again opens to reveal a very large original leather writing slope with stunning gold tooling. The top section opens once again with a good storage compartment for keeping letters, papers and stationery.
The main compartment of the box is superbly fitted with a Mahogany divided stationery rack, due to the large size of this piece, all these compartments are very usable today. The back compartment retains the original leather blotter which has several old documents from the 1920's, the box is earlier, dating to around 1880. To the right is a bank of little drawers topped with the original slate with a date from 1889.
To the front of this is a holder for calendar cards, these have been professionally re-created, next to this is the original gold embossed leather perpetual calendar.
The box comes complete with the two brass topped inkwells and sitting each side of the removable pen tray, with storage below.
Quite spectacular in every way, complete and in magnificent condition a true heirloom example. Measuring a mammoth 16 1/2" x 9" x 10 3/4" tall while closed. Please also note that our FREE worldwide shipping still applies to this piece, a huge saving for such a large imposing piece. Pen shown on the slope and Stationery are for display only and not included in the sale.
