Antique silver pocket watch, Lambhill, Glasgow
An antique silver pocket watch / centre seconds chronograph.
The watch has a ¾ plate stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover. The cover has a presentation inscription from Lambhill Gospel Band to Sergt Baird Hay SR in honour of winning the Military Medal. Lambhill is a district within the Scottish city of Glasgow.
A little research has revealed that Baird Hay lived at 8 Crawford Street in Lambhill and he was in the Gordon Highlanders. In 1922 he appears to have sailed to Wyoming, with his wife Rebecca following soon afterwards. He was subsequently recorded as living in New York in 1930.
The watch measures 52mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the outer case back for Birmingham (import mark) 1917 with an importer’s mark for George Stockwell. From 1 June 1907, Stockwells acted as assay agents, facilitating the import into Britain of foreign gold and silver items, which had to be assayed and hallmarked in a UK assay office before being released for retail. The case has the odd minor but overall is in good condition and the engine turned detail to the case back is still nice and crisp.
The watch glass is in good condition.
The white enamel dial is faintly signed with the name of the original retailer, John Russel of London. The hands are pin set which means you press the small button next to the winding crown, whilst simultaneously turning the hands clockwise with the crown. The stop watch feature is stopped and started via the sliding button on the side of the watch… the design is such that the movement stops ticking when in the off position.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
