Antique Oil on Canvas - "Caller Herrin" by JH Boel
This is a beautifully painted, thoughtful and quietly atmospheric oil painting. It features a Scottish herring seller, with the morning sun rising over the sea behind her.
Signed and dated lower left - JH Boel 1912.
It is painted in gentle colours and softly illuminated by the sunlight behind and the reflections off the sea.
A quiet and contemplative study which throws our focus straight to the central character.
On the back of the frame is written indistinctly in pencil -
"Caller Herrin !" Scene near Stonehaven
Stonehaven is a coastal town in Aberdeenshire North East Scotland.
Caller Herrin! Literally means 'fresh herring' and was typically the cry of the fish sellers who carried fresh catch in creels (baskets), selling them door to door.
John Henry Boel - 1880-1920,
was a British Landscape Painter. He painted in oils and less frequently in watercolour. Boel concentrated mainly on landscapes, figures and coastal scenes. His landscapes often depicted the Scottish highlands.
