Antique Mourning Brooch, Gold, Onyx, Pearl
A stunning antique Victorian mourning brooch, a beautifully made piece that is full of sentiment.
Oval shaped brooch in 15ct yellow gold with a central oval onyx cabochon set with a single seed pearl.
The onyx is surrounded by pretty winding vines with textured gold ivy leaves, the symbolism of everlasting or eternal, maybe the love everlasting, the soul or the memories a beautiful sentimental touch.
Surrounding the centre is an elaborate enamel border in black and white enamel, very well done with a Greek key type style.
The back has a deep glazed compartment for hair but this is currently empty and could be used for a photograph.
It has an old C type clasp, the pin is a base metal.
Condition:
Good used condition overall, tiny chip to the onyx, some evidence of soft solder to the reverse, the glass panel is dusty underneath and there is a small opening to the gold on the rim at the top.
