Antique Miniature Watercolour Painting Plinys Dove
These doves, known as the Capitoline Doves or Doves of Pliny, appear frequently as the subject of micromosaics. The image comes from a Roman floor mosaic discovered in 1737 at Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli, which in turn is believed to be a copy of a lost ancient Greek mosaic at Pergamon.
This is a delightful Georgian period watercolour of the subject in an oval brass mount set into a black Georgian miniature frame with original pressed brass hanger to the top with vine detail.
The painting measures 12 cms by 10.5 cms overall including the frame.
