Antique English Boulle Photograph Frame c.1890
A very smart late nineteenth century Boulle (Tortoise Shell Intricately inlaid with cut brass, then brightly polished) photograph frame, in beautiful condition.
The tortoiseshell was attached to the hardwood frame with coloured matter below (in this case red) to give this highly sought after reddish-orange colouring to these works of art. This process first developed by the French cabinetmaker, André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 – 28 February 1732, highly popular in nineteenth century Britain.
The sides of the frame are veneered in exotic Rosewood with brass inlaid stringing and the back appears to be Fruitwood or Walnut. The back including the carved original folding easel is all in excellent condition and slides to enable the picture within to be changed with ease.
Superb quality and condition with an overall measurement of 5 3/8" x 4 1/4" with a glazed aperture measuring 3 5/8" x 2 3/8" a fine example in the harder to find landscape configuration.
