Antique Christening Gifts For Girls 1900s
A rare French antique pendant / locket of immense charm made in the 1900s. The piece is gilt & shows a little girl in a bonnet playing with very large snail. The pendant is minutely detailed, when looking through my loupe I can clearly see the child's facial features, her chubby cheeks, eyes, nose, mouth & thick hair. Her bonnet is held on her head with ribbons which are tied in a large bow under her chin. Her left hand is stretched out to the snail, the thumb & all four fingers well defined. The snail is right in the center of a large flower & the composition of the whole piece is perfect. The little girl is looking out of an arched window. The background is silver foil made from tin. Climbing flowers adorn the brick work. The sides & base are just as beautiful. The sides are decorated with repousse work & the back is enchanting - on a textured background, mistletoe, Lily of the valley & daisy form flowers are shown in low relief. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The lid lifts to reveal a tiny mirror which gives a perfectly clear reflection. The interior of the locket shows the reverse design of the base. The locket is in remarkably good condition for its age.
An ideal & unusual christening present or tin wedding gift as in France foil was made from tin around this time.
This measures 3 cm wide & weighs 9.9 grams.
