(Anonymous) Memoires D'Un Militaire. 1759
Mr R.(Anonymous)
Memoires D'Un Militaire. Depuis l'annee 1735 Jusqu'au Quartier-d'Hyver de 1758.
A Wesel & Par Tout, Paris, 1759.
211 pages with a red and black title page, original full mottled calf and morocco label on spine with gilt titles and raised bands with gilt tooling. The title page is a little grubby and the "Avant-Propos" has a two word comment, of a previous owner I think it may say in French "preve franceson"? (Prevent France?). Difficult as it has been trimmed off slightly. The condition overall is well preserved copy. The paper is all quality rag hand made paper. Binding firm and just a little thinning at the base of the spine, no loose stitching, a fine tight book The British Library seems to be the only Institutional Library with a copy ( But still give no author?). No other 1st editions online only modern paperback reprints The memoirs are a progression of the writers military memoirs from the years 1735 to 1758 the year before this was published and in the Hiver L'Hyver?) Alpine region of France. The contents describe battles, skirmishes and events he was involved in for France and the wars the country was involved in at this time, He started as a Lieutenant with a purchased commission, he grew up in a village in Haute Provence and married the daughter of a magistrate (I think all this is on the first page but my French is very poor and I may have mis-read this bit. He mentions generals, Le Duc Grammont a Lieut-Gen? Artillery, troops and other fellow officers, and other places in Europe, etc. RARE. French Language
