An interesting pair of Chinese Export chairs
In the mid 18th century 'Chippendale' style with carved top rails and central splat bearing the coat of arms of the Blood family.
These fanciful chairs are a wonderful example of the type of Colonial antique furniture which was manufactured for English patrons when posted or living in far flung colonies of the Empire. They were made by local cabinet makers often working from the simplest of sketches or designs of the original English furniture fashionable at the time.
The Latin inscription "Honor Virtutis Praemium" translates as Honor is the reward for virtue and forms part of the Blood family coat of arms. An ancestor of the Blood family was Colonel Thomas Blood (1618 – 24 August 1680) an Anglo-Irish officer and self-styled colonel best known for his cattempt to steal the Crown Jewels of England from the Tower of London in 1671. Circa 1850
W J Gravener Antiques is a family owned business, started in 1963 by William who was joined by son, Mark in 1981 and continues today with the same ethos of dealing in fine quality English and Continental furniture, mirrors and decorative objects, from the 18th & 19th centuries.
