An Early 17th Century Oak Wainscot Chair
An Early 17th Century Oak Wainscot Chair
Circa 1610
I am sitting in this chair as II currently list it ,deep down II feel it is a keeper but as my wife keeps telling me II am a dealer over being a collector so hopefully that says it all.
Recently purchased from Surrey this wonderful chair is as close to a barn find as one can get,it has not seen a coat of wax for years and has a lovely natural colour and crusty suface and is in totally original condition.
The oversized crest rail with a deep guilloche carving that continues down the sides of the plain back panel as one can see, which has a wonderful swirling knot pattern to the top facing right hand side.
The arms which show signs of heavy use are worn down to expose the tennons ,as II sit in it the right hand arm is worn down more than the left and talking of the left there is a burn mark underneath where the original owner must have placed a candle stick or rushnip on the edge of the seat and could this explain the extra wear to the right where the body must have sat as to save ones legs from being burnt II think so.
The seat which consists of two planks has a moulded edge which has worn down with a lovely smooth edge to the front ,the front legs are turned with square legs to the rear united with original box stretcher formation.
As II say the colour and suface in my opinion is as good as it gets and it gives off a little creak when first sat in but is still solid with only the slighest movement, the wood is not of the highest quality II feel it is a Country take on a merchants Town chair which gives it more appeal in my eyes.
