An Art Deco Terrecotta Sculpture By Ugo Cipriani
An Art Deco terracotta sculpture by Ugo Cipriani depicting a fisherman hauling in his nets. Full of movement and of impressive scale this sculpture is of bronze patinated terracotta and is in very good condition. 410mm high, 690mm wide and 180mm deep. French. Circa 1940.
Ugo Cipriani born in Florence in Italy on August 13, 1887, died in Paris on June 18, 1960 is an Italian sculptor, son of the sculptor Adolfo Cipriani. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, he worked with marble, terracotta, bronze and alabaster in the spirit of the Art Deco movement of the 1920s. One of his most famous works, a bronze monument dating from 1919 of the nationalist Guglielmo Oberdan, can be found in Florence on the square of the same name. In 1935, he emigrated to France to escape the fascist regime of Mussolini. He lived in Paris as a political refugee and continued to create there until his death in 1960. W J Gravener Antiques is a family owned business, started in 1963 by William who was joined by son, Mark in 1981 and continues today with the same ethos of dealing in fine quality English and Continental furniture, mirrors and decorative objects, from the 18th & 19th centuries.
