Amlash Iron-age pitcher
A finely modelled glossy reddish-orange Amlash pitcher of the early Iron Age, with a wide, globular body. The pitcher has a single handle with vestigial animal head knob at the top, extending from just below the rim to the shoulders, and stands on a flattened base.
Early Near Eastern Iron Age: Circa 10th-9th century BC.
Height 23 cms (9 ins)
The term ‘Amlash Culture’, has generally been used to designate material cultures excavated at Gilan, an archaeological site on the southern shore of the Caspian sea, and refers to a group of Iron Age pottery and metal executions with a strong visual character. Most of the Amlash pottery vessels are believed to have stylistically and typologically been inspired by bronze wares of the same period. Despite its proximity to the large Mesopotamian cultures, the geographical barrier of the high Zagros and Elburz Mountains kept it relatively isolated and a unique ceramic tradition developed there. All our items are supplied with an illustrated certificate of authenticity (COA) which will act as as a guarantee that all items are authentic and dated to the period stated.
All our items include shipping to mainland UK.
Buyers outside the UK and non-mainland UK need to email us for postage costs before buying. Overseas buyers need to check that the item they intend buying can be imported into their country and will be responsible for paying any customs and/or tax charges.
Payment is can be made either through clicking on the Buy Securely icon, or alternatively via a bank transfer (in which case we can pass on the resulting saving of Paypal fees). We are not able to process debit/credit card payments over the phone.
