Alice Mary Burton RBA 1893-1964 Exhibited Oil Alice Mary Burton 1893-1964 Oil Painting %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are pleased to offer for sale this delightful oil painting on canvas by the artist Alice Mary Burton, who has signed the painting A. M. Burton in the lower left hand corner. It was purchased at auction with a similar smaller oil which was unsigned and these two were part of a collection of paintings by the artist. The painting depicts a large doll, dressed in Victorian clothes, slumped over next to a trunk full of doll's clothes, with part of a doll's tea set. One of her shoes is lying in front of her. It is possible to imagine the scenario - the little girl who owned the doll, had been called to go to bed and had to stop playing tea parties with her doll.

This painting bears a label attached to the reverse, as shown, which states that it was exhibited at the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1968,and giving the address of the artist as Pightle Cottage, Silverstone, Towcester, Northants.

Alice Mary Burton was born on the 21st September 1893 at Nogent-sur-Oise in France. She studied Art at the Byam Shaw and Vicat Cole School of Art and at the Regent Street Polytechnic School (Bronze and Silver Medals). She was a portrait and figure painter, although she did produce a few landscapes. She was elected a full Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1932.

She was living in North Wales in 1913, Tunbridge Wells in Kent by 1920 and London from 1921. As far as we can ascertain, she died in London in 1964.

There are 11 of her painting in the National Collection. (See BBC Your Paintings on google). She exhibited 8 paintings at the Royal Academy, 64 at the Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Oil Painters Institute 12, as well as other provincial exhibitions.

Her biographical details may be found in the Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) and the Dictionary of British Artists by Grant Waters. Auction results achieved for works by this artist may be found at the usual sites, where there are 17 listings at artprice and similar numbers elsewhere.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" (9cm) pale gilt frame and is ready to hang.
