Alfred H. Palmer 1905-84 Oil Garden Chilton Hall
We are pleased to offer one of a small collection of works by the artist Alfred Hawkins Palmer, who has signed the painting with his signature logo, that of a cockle shell and a palm leaf, signifying a Palmer, in the lower right hand corner. He has signed and inscribed the painting verso as 'Mr. Herbert's Garden, Chilton, Suffolk', and dated it 1978. The painting is an oil on board, prepared by the artist, as described on the reverse of the board, and depicts what we now believe is a corner of the estate of Chilton Hall, Chilton, Suffolk. The artist only lived just less than eight miles away from Chilton in Belchamp Walter. The added bonus is that the painting is framed in a carved wooden frame, hand carved by the artist and inscribed on the back of the frame.
Not expecting a result, we searched on google for Mr. Herbert's garden, Chilton, Suffolk and eventually, after following many lines of enquiry, came up with the following information, which all hangs together.
The Hall is a Tudor moated manor house in red brick, that was build by Sir Robert Crane. It is Grade II listed and the estate was 23 acres. It is now in private hands. After a fire, only the east wing remains and was in a very poor state when the estate was purchased by Sir Thomas Crisp English, the surgeon who saved the life of Sir Winston Churchill by operating on him for appendicitis on the same day that he was consulted. It was a very good thing for the country that he did, as the appendix had ruptured and was gangrenous. Sir Crisp, as he was known, renovated the house and had it returned to red brick, by removing the later render and ivy and restoring the tower. He and his wife enjoyed gardening and spent many hours planting and establishing the gardens. They had one daughter Ruth.
Ruth married a gentleman named Aubrey Herbert OBE, the son of Sir Jesse Herbert, who was a prominent person in the Liberal Party under Lloyd George. His son served for 22 years as a Liberal Parish Councillor and died in 1982 Obviously, Chilcot Hall's garden was known locally as Mr Herbert's garden when this painting was executed in 1978.
On the Suffolk Heritage Explorer website, we found a description of Chilton Hall and the estate and we have found a description of the walled kitchen garden, which clearly describes the subject of this painting. It reads: KITCHEN GARDEN The walled garden at Chilton covers approximately 0.25ha and lies to the west of the Hall, beyond the moat which forms its east boundary. The red-brick walls (listed grade II) with ornamental castellated capping form the north, west and south boundaries and they date from the early years of the C17 (1597 map and site inspection). In the west wall is an arched gateway centred on the garden door of the west front of the Hall and on the outer face of the south wall is a small C17 tile-roofed animal shelter.
Alfred Hawkins Palmer 1905-1984, was born in Sutton, Surrey. There is little information available about his early life, due to the census records after 1911 being unavailable to the public, but in the 1939 Register, he was still living with his parents and sister at 9 Cumnor Road, Sutton and was listed as an artist. We can find no record of him being in the forces during WWII, but cannot verify this. We do know that his address later became Pond Cottage, Bells Road, Belchamp Walter, Nr. Sudbury, Essex CO10 7AS. A tiny village very close to the Suffolk border and where he was buried in the cemetery of the Anglican church of St. Mary the Virgin after his death in 1984 at the age of 79.
(Palmers were pilgrims who had been on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and wore cockleshells on their hats as they were a symbol of St. James, whose shrine in Spain was one most visited by pilgrims, and carried a staff adorned with palm boughs to commemorate Jesus' entry into Jerusalem.)
He specialised in oil paintings of flowers and landscapes, although we also found an early watercolour in this collection. He was also a very accomplished wood carver. We know, from a label on the back of one of the old frames that he had obviously re-used, that he exhibited at the Chelsea Art Society, when they were holding their exhibitions at the Chenil Galleries. We normally quote auction results, but the Alfred Palmers are so mixed up, that the only way that you could see examples of Alfred Hawkins Palmer's work is to look at all the Alfred Palmer works, ignoring the dates as the auction houses often say 1911-1985, but this is incorrect, and look at the flower paintings done in meticulous details and landscapes of cottage scenes in Suffolk. There are several artists with this name, one of whom is South African.
The painting is framed in a 2 1/4 inch carved wooden frame, hand carved by the artist, as inscribed on the back, as shown.. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
Image size: 23 1/2 x 19 5/8 inches - 59.7cm x 49.75cm
Frame size: 28 1/8 x 24 1/8 inches - 71.45cm x 61.3cm
Medium: Oils on liquitex prepared board
Condition: Very good. The painting is clean and there is no paint loss or craquelure. The frame was hand carved by the artist from solid wood and has been rewaxed. It is in very good condition.
