After Edwaert Collier Vanitas Portico Clock & Teacup

1 of 6
FOLLOWER of Edwaert Collier (c.1640-1708) Dutch.
This artist is recognised as one of the masters of this genre and type of painting.
A fine and decorative oil on wooden panel still life interior scene.
A book is open on a chenille throw at a desk, the reader has a cup of tea and something stronger in a glass to the side.
There is a locket on the desk and behind the book on the wall a miniature of a handsome man, to the side is a large and impressive antique clock.
-
VANITAS
A still life artwork which includes various symbolic objects designed to remind the viewer of their mortality and of the worthlessness of worldly goods and pleasures
-
The term originally comes from the opening lines of the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible: ‘Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities, all is vanity.’
-
Vanitas are closely related to memento mori still lifes which are artworks that remind the viewer of the shortness and fragility of life (memento mori is a Latin phrase meaning ‘remember you must die’) and include symbols such as skulls and extinguished candles. However vanitas still-lifes also include other symbols such as musical instruments, wine and books to remind us explicitly of the vanity (in the sense of worthlessness) of worldly pleasures and goods.
-
The symbolism here is obviously romantic perhaps representing lovers parted. The painting is beautifully and intricately worked by a capable hand.
The artist has signed the piece and the signature is hidden in the painting hanging at the top right of the work.
-
The signature is somewhat illegible although I am sure the artist would be of a continental European origin.
-
The painting is framed in a period English gilt frame with all the original gilding.
This painting has a great period look and is ready to hang. C.1900.
-
Overall frame: 20 ¾ by 25 ¼ Inches
