Aert Van Der Neer

Occupation: Painter
Movement: Dutch Golden Age, Baroque
Aert van der Neer was a Dutch painter. He was known for his nocturnal scenes and winter landscapes. He was active during the Dutch Golden Age and Baroque period, and was a contemporary of Meindert Hobbema and Albert Cuyp.
Early Life
The life of Aert van der Neer has remained somewhat elusive due to a lack of historical evidence. According to researcher Rene van Dijk, he was born in the town of Gorinchem in western Holland, and served as an agent to the Lords of Arkel, the latter a fiefdom in the Netherlands.
In the mid-1620s, van der Neer formed a friendship with the painters Raphael and Jochem Govertsz Camphuyen, whose sister Lysbeth he married in 1629. Their first child, Grietje, was born later that year, followed by Eglon, Cornelia, Elisabeth, Jan, Pieter, and Alida, over the next two decades, all of whom were baptized at the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.
Work
After receiving lessons in basic technique from his brothers-in-law, Aert van der Neer moved to Amsterdam and produced his first painting in 1632, a genre piece that contained both his signature and Jochem’s. Similar to the idiom of Gillis van Coninxloo of the Frankenthal School, his work followed the tradition of Flemish landscape painting with its solitary figures and restricted use of earthy colors.
Van der Neer had an inclination towards winter scenes, evident in pieces such as “View of the River in Winter.” His canvases often depict water-bodies by the light of the setting sun and rising moon as in the painting, “River Scene by Moonlight” and although his subject matter remained limited, the quality of his brushwork was unparalleled. He exemplified the principles of 17th century Dutch landscape —sensitively handling his painting of cloud-filled skies and isolated characters ambling through the woodlands.
Legacy
Despite a certain level of prolificacy, van der Neer remained virtually unknown through the course of his life. He was quite poor, and his family also suffered great deprivation. Knowing that a successful career in art was unlikely after decades of trying, he opened a wine tavern called De Graef van Hollantwith his son Janin in 1659 in Kalverstraat, in order to supplement his revenue. Within two years, this endeavor failed and he was declared bankrupt.
Death and Legacy
Towards the end of his life, his art was valued at less than 5 shillings a piece. He lived in extreme poverty, but kept on painting. Fifteen years later, Aert van der Neer died in Amsterdam at the age of 74 under dismal circumstances in November, 1677.
Van der Neer’s exquisite portrayal of light makes his pictures much sought after by collectors, and the best collection is in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
Several years after van der Neer’s death, his son Eglon was appointed a court painter in Dusseldorf and saw far greater success than his father. Eglon van der Neer is best known for his genre paintings in the vein of Metsu and Terboch, although the family influence is equally apparent to art historians.
