A. W. Redgate 1860-1906 Oil Welsh Landscape 1881 Arthur W Redgate 1860-1906 Exh 1800-1906 %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering for sale this very well executed landscape oil painting by the Nottingham artist Arthur Walker Redgate, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1881. On the reverse of the canvas, he has given the title of the painting as 'Torrent Walk, Dolgelly' and 'painted from nature'. He has also inscribed it Studio Bromley House Nottingham. We understand from research, the for a short while in the early 1880s, Arthur gave his address as that of his father's studio at Bromley House private subscription library, which still exists today. Also on the reverse of the stretcher is the original label signed A. W. Redgate, Studio Bromley House and the price of 6 guineas.

Torrent Walk is a spectacular path which follows the River Clywedog past several waterfalls and turbulent stretches and the banks are through beautiful woodland. It is situated 2 miles from Dolgellau in the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales.

Arthur Walker Redgate was born in Nottingham in1860, the eldest son of the artist Sylvanus Redgate and Elizabeth Walker. His father was a photographer and portrait painter and 13 of his painting are in the National Collection and can be viewed at BBC Your Paintings.

Arthur painted landscapes, mostly of the Midlands countryside and usually containing rustic figures or farm animals. This painting is somewhat unusual, as it was painted from nature in North Wales and contains no figures. He was living with his family in Nottinham until 1883, when he married his wife Edith Elizabeth and by 1891 they were living in Castle Donnington in Leicestershire. However they moved back to Nottingham and by 1901, they were living at 11 Charnwood Grove, West Bridgford. Sadly Arthur died in 1906 at an early age. Equally sadly, his eldest son John Silvanus Redgate died of pneumonia in February 1919, following service in the Royal Army Service Corps.

He exhibited from 1880 until his death, 28 paintings at the Royal Academy, 95 at Nottingham City Art Gallery and elsewhere in the provinces.

Auction results achieved for works by this artist may be found at artprice (169), findartinfo (77), arcadja (68) and artnet. Please note that many of the sites call him Arthur William Redgate, but on checking birth registrations, his second name was Walker, which makes sense as it was his mother's maiden name. He used his father's name as his son John's second name.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3" ornate gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
