A very rare Welsh Sycamore Chair Welsh chair %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A rare and important Welsh Chair. An example of which can be found at St Fagins National Museum of History. The construction and design of this chair are unusual for the period. The chair dates to around 1850 and was painted black a decade later to mark the passing of Prince Albert. The chair still shows traces of this to the front. However the back of the chair is still in the original black paint. It’s made of sycamore and unusually for the period the legs and spindles have not been turned. However instead have been formed using a spoke shave. The chair although looking like a stick chair has the size and comfort of a broad armed Windsor chair. Underneath the chair you can find the original ticking to pack the legs into the seat base. Truly wonderful. A museum piece..
