A rather rare and charming diorama mechanical singing bird. There are two birds in this scene, a very small iridescent green humming bird that dances, twists and jumps from branch to branch whilst a yellow finch sits at the base of the tree collecting seeds. Whilst these two birds operate a bird is heard chirping. Produced by Botems in Paris sometime in the mid to late 19th century this particular model was quite rare compared to the more common caged birds can often be found in auction houses and antique dealers shelves. The mechanism is wound via a small hole in the side of the base and operates on demand when a button is pulled out. I have seen one other like this one but having a “coin operated” function as well. The mechanism has been fully overhauled and functions perfectly as originally intended.. the hummingbird twists, flicks and jumps from branch to branch quickly and the finch on the floor bobs in a purposeful way.
