Carl F.H.Werner 1808-1984 Pair Oils Still Life
We are offering for sale this pair of oils on board by the artist CARL WERNER, who has signed the paintings in the opposing lower corners. One of the paintings depicts a bunch of purple grapes, with a peach and a nut, and the other depicts a bunch of white grapes, with an apple and a plum.
CARL WERNER, 1808-1894 was born in Weimar, Germany and studied painting under Julius Schnoor von Carolsteld in Leipzig. He later studied architecture in Munich from 1829-1931 before returning to painting. He won a scholarship to go to Italy, where he opened a studio in Venice and stayed there until 1850. He also travelled frequently to England, where he exhibited at the New Watercolour Society. He travelled extensively in Europe, painting scenes of the places he visited, including Sicily, Palestine, Egypt, Spain, and Greece. He was a member of the Venetian Academy. He was elected an Associate of the New Watercolour Society in 1860 and a full Member that same year, but resigned in 1883. He became a Professor at Leipzig Academy and died there in 1894.
He painted principally in watercolour, for which he is best known, but also painted some architectural and landscape oils. He also painted these rather luminous still life oils in a stipple technique, where the surface of some of the fruit is smooth, but the rest of the painting is stippled, of which this painting is an example. His scenic watercolours and oils sell for thousands of pounds.
Auction records of prices achieved by his works can be found at artnet.com (228 listings), artprice.com (248) and findartinfo.com (78). He was a very prolific artist. Biographical information for this artist can be found in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, and The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by H. Mallalieu. His work is frequently featured in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market and his exhibitions in London can be found in Graves Dictionary.
One of his still life oils on similar size achieved £347 in Germany on the 7th March 2009.
The paintings have been newly framed in a 1 7/8" gilt frame and are ready to hang.
