6 x George Edwards 18thC Hummingbird Engravings
A lovely set of six hand-coloured copper plate engravings featuring hummingbirds by George Edwards (1694-1773). All appear in the volume ‘A Natural History of Uncommon Birds’ 1743 and have a plate number with inscription ‘Published according to Act of Parliament 1742 by George Edwards’ along with a description of the bird pictured.
Edwards rose from humble beginnings to become a renowned naturalist and ornithologist. Many of the birds he recorded had never previously been illustrated.
The engravings were uniformly mounted and framed in Hogarth frames in the early 20th century by Walker’s Galleries (founded 1890) of 118 New Bond Street, London and have a label verso. Frame size is 39 x 34 cm.
Overall condition is good with 282 years of age toning to the wove paper (most of the lighter brown areas are caused by camera reflection) and there is a small amount of foxing and a few dead thunder flies. There are some tiny dirt particles between the glass and the mount to the left side of one.
All of the frames appear in reasonably good condition with no losses. Currently shipping to UK and USA.
Free shipping to UK mainland on smaller items.
For larger items and overseas, please email for quote.
Preferred payment method is bank transfer. Paypal also accepted.
