4 x Victorian Silver Plated Salts with Gilt Interior
This is a top quality set of four Victorian Silver Plated Open Salts with Gilt interiors. Each salt stands on three hoof feet and the bodies are decorated with engraved flowers and foliage in the Aesthetic style. The cartouche on the front of each salt has the initials AS elegantly engraved in it.
The salts are made in Birmingham by Jonas & George Bowen and date to around the 1860s/70s. The firm was originally founded as Jonas Bowen & Son in 1840, then became Jonas & George Bowen in 1859 and finally George Bowen & Son, later Sons, around 1878. They produced very high quality silver plated tableware and in the early 20th century, a small amount of Sterling Silver flatware. They ceased trading around the start of the First World War.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and no silver plate loss. All four salts stand securely on a flat surface. The gilt interior has worn a little thin in places but they still look magnificent and are perfectly usable today. As the interiors are gilded, these salts would never have had blue glass liners. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each salt is 3.8cm / 1.5ins high and 6.9cm / 2.7ins in diameter and the set of four together weigh in at 275.7g / 9.7oz.
The salts are marked on the base the Gothic style J & G B for Jonas & George Bowen and the EP for silver plate.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
