2 x Victorian Silver Plate Candlesticks c1860s-80s
This is a good quality unusual Pair of Victorian Silver Plate Candlesticks. The candlesticks have large saucer bases with gadrooned rims, cylindrical sconces and removable nozzles with matching gadrooned rims. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The candlesticks were made in Birmingham by silversmiths George R. Collis & Co and date to around the 1860s to 80s or possibly a little earlier. George Richmond Collis acquired the business of renowned Birmingham silversmith Sir Edward Thomason after his retirement in 1835. Collis continued the high quality silver work of his predecessor and also began electroplating in the 1840s. The firm participated in the Great Exhibition and opened a London showroom in Regent Street. In 1888 the firm was taken over by S.W. Smith & Co.
Condition is fair, with just some rubbing to the silver plate around the sconce inside one saucer and under the bases plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 135 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each candlestick is 17.5cm / 6.9ins in diameter and stands 5.5cm / 2.1ins high. The pair together weigh 819g / 28.9oz.
The candlesticks are marked on the insides of the saucers with the G.R.C stamp for George Richmond Collis and the crown. leaf, star and flower stamps for their range of silver plate.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
