2 x Victorian Shell Dishes & Butter Knives, 1896
Here we have a fine quality cased pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Shell Dishes with matching Butter Knives. The dishes are shaped as scallop shells and each stand on three ball feet, whilst the butter knives are in the classic Old English pattern. The set is presented in a luxurious box with a dark red velvet base, ruffled red silk piping around the edge and a red silk lining to the lid bearing the mark of retailer Edward Tessier of New Bond Street, London.
The shell dishes and butter knives are made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths Atkin Brothers and all four pieces are dated for 1896.
Condition of all the pieces is very good with just one tiny ding to the rim of one of the shell dishes, which doesn't detract from the look or function at all. The outside of the box is quite scuffed but it has done its job and the inside is magnificent. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The shell dishes are each 12cm / 4.7ins deep by 10cm / 3.9ins across and the butter knives are each 13cm / 5.1ins long. The full set, unboxed, weighs in at a substantial 153.5g / 5.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks match across all four pieces and are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter d for 1896 and the HA makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
