2 x Art Nouveau Silver Plate Candlesticks, J Dixon
Here we have a fine quality Pair of Large Art Nouveau Silver Plate Candlesticks. The candlesticks have circular eight lobed bases, weighted for stability, with acanthus leaf decoration on the uppers. They have a waisted stem again with acanthus leaf decoration on the top and fluted sconces with removable nozzles, which are once more acanthus leaf decorated. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The candlesticks were made in Sheffield by famous silversmiths and electroplaters James Dixon & Sons Ltd and date to around 1890 to 1910. With a history dating back to around 1806 when it was a partnership between James Dixon and Thomas Smith, James Dixon & Sons was one of Sheffield's foremost silversmiths and electroplaters, particularly noted for their relationship with designer Dr Christopher Dresser whose groundbreaking silver plate teapot designs for the company are still being reproduced today. They were highly successful and remained in business up until the mid 1980s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.
Condition is very good with just minor plate loss on a few of the high points after many years of polishing and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The candlesticks are of a substantial size standing 24cm / 9.4ins high and being 13cm / 5.1ins in diameter across the bases. The pair together weigh in at 1.48kg / 52.17oz.
Each candlestick is stamped inside the sconce with James Dixon & Sons, one stating electroplated and the other EPBM, both terms for silver plate.
Shipping in the UK is £20 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which covers the weight and value of the candlesticks.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
