Large 19th.c. woodcut poster ‘Napoleon Le Grand’ by the celebrated French publisher ‘Imagerie Pellarin a Epinal’. Splendid naive image of Napoleon I on his famous grey mount Marengo printed onto watermarked Arches paper (Arches was a town near to the Pellarin press in Epinal in North Eastern France) with hand coloured detail. Excellent condition, presented in a late 19th.c. oak frame.
Interestingly the expression image d’Épinal has become proverbial in French and refers to an emphatically traditionalist and naïve depiction of something, showing only its good aspects.
