19thc Smokers Bow Windsor chair

This is a wonderful example of a mid/late 19thc beech Smokers bow Windsor chair with an elm seat, of good colour. This chair is stamped W.W Skull & Son Wycombe.

The W.W probaby refers to West Wycombe & I believe the Maker to be Edwin Skull of High Wycombe.

This piece has a large top back support leading down to broad arms, similar to those used on a broad-armed Windsor chair.

These are supported by eight turned supports, the front two under arm supports being slightly larger.

This chair has an unusually deep seat which makes it very comfortable & a pleasing shape to the eye.

The legs are large, but finely turned with ball & vase-shaped designs.

The double H-form stretchers also have these fine turnings, which adds to its' quality.

This type of chair is possibly one of the most comfortable wooden seated chairs, due to the design & was often used as an office chair.

Many of these type of chairs were produced in the latter part of the 19thc, although evidence shows that they started producing this design from 1849.

Edwin Skull, chair manufacturer of High Wycombe, was established in 1844. This was a highly productive company, employing 30 men in 1851
& up to 60 in 1861.
