19thC European School Oval Oil Portrait of a Lady
The well depicted three-quarter depiction on board of a young to middle-aged lady in a neutral contemplative pose survives from the first half of the nineteenth century and is presented in its original carved & gilt painted softwood frame depicting large birds and floral pierced borders.
Although the canvas has very obvious craquelure damage (possibly due to being hung over a fire-place) to its surface, the quality of the painting is fairly accomplished. The obvious flawed but evocative condition of the picture, in this case, is its attraction, decoratively.
This work is possibly Portugese, or failing that, Dutch, Spanish or Italian. It is quite hard to pin the origin of the picture down due to the frame it sits in and in that the sitter is Brazilian-esque, dark haired and relatively olive skinned whilst frame has a an Eastern feel, giving the picture an origin more complex as the two don’t necessarily sit together. There is no signs of the work being a smaller part of a larger composition.
This pictures obvious flaws, ample quality and resistance to being pinned down to a particular origin, makes it rather intriguing.
