19th Landscape Oil Painting of Moseley Pool Artist Mary Groves 19thc Landscape Oil Paintings Moseley Pool %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering this lovely oil on canvas by the artist Mary Groves, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner.and entitled on the edge of the stretcher 'Moseley Pool'.

The painting depicts the bank of the pool, with the waters reflecting the trees to the right in resplendent autumnal colours.

LOCATION
Moseley Park and Pool is part of the former estate of Moseley Hall, which was rebuilt in 1792-6 - the park being designed by Humphrey Repton.

The estate began to be split up for housing in the second half of the 19th Century and the portion that is now the park was split from the rest by a road and some local landowners formed the Moseley Park and Pool Company Ltd. in 1898 to protect the land from further development.

The land amounts to the lake and eleven acres. In 2006, the limited company was converted to a charitable Trust and is now run by volunteer trustees, access being on an annual membership basis.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mary Groves was born in Farnham, Surrey in the second quarter of 1854. She studied at Lambeth School of Art, Miller's Lane, where she won a bronze medal in 1883 and later at the Royal Academy Schools.
In the census of 1891, she was living with her widowed mother at 58 Jeffery’s Road, Clapham, London and is listed as an artist painter and living on her own means.
In 1901, at the age of 47, she is living at the same address with her brother and his wife, again listed as an artist. By 1911, she is still living with her brother, but at 1 Sibella Road, Clapham, London SW.

(As her sisters-in-law came from Birmingham, this may be how she came to paint the Moseley pool.) We can find no trace of her death date, but, as she wasn't listed in the 1939 Register, we believe it to be in the early to mid thirties.

EXHIBITIONS
In 1906, she has a joint exhibition at the Dore Gallery in London, where it was commented that Miss Mary Groves 'exhibits several commendable studies of picturesque old buildings in Belgium'.

A photogravure of her RA exhbiited paintings 'Sing unto the Lord', was offered for sale by the Illustrated London News for 4 guineas for Artist's Proofs and 1 guinea for prints.

There are 3 of her paintings in the National Collection, 2 held by Isle of Wight Council and 1 'Impudent Hussies' by St. Helens Council.
