19th Century Stick Back Windsor Armchair. Windsor Chair Hoop back %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A fine and substantial antique country stick back Windsor open armchair. It has the early features of crook underarm supports and a crinoline stretcher uniting the legs. The back hoop, arms and crinoline stretcher are made of yew wood, the rest of fruitwood and ash. The thick, beautifully shaped seat is, as usual, of elm, and stamped with the makers name, "Brand Sleaford". John Brand is known as a chairmaker in Sleaford, Lincolnshire in the first half of the 19th century. This chair has had a good life regarding wear, with minor old repairs to the arm hoop evidenced by spots of "filler" to the wood (see photograph). Circa 1830
