19th Century Horn Spoon British horn
A lovely fiddle pattern horn dessert spoon. Very dark horn, when I first bought this I thought it was a dark wood but it flexes a little, closer inspection showed me what it is. In superb smooth and shiny condition it is a dark chocolate brown. Had it been in silver I would have no doubt from the shape of the bowl that it was a Georgian spoon but this one has no hallmarks. It seems from a fashion point of view it cannot be later than mid 19th century and probably earlier. All the more remarkable that it is in such good condition, it can have had but little use. Although purchased in West Wales I cannot state for certain that it's Welsh, but it could very easily have come from a slightly better off household that didn't want to be seen to use wooden spoons.
