19th C. Oil Painting Topsail Schooner leaving Port
We are offering for sale this interesting maritime oil painting on canvas which is, unfortunately, unsigned. The painting depicts a three masted topsail schooner which has the addition of steam power. We do not know the name of the ship depicted, but it is interestingly flying both the Red Ensign, which denotes (from 1864) that it is a British Merchant Vessel, but also from its foremast, the American Flag. (This could, of course, be artistic licence.) We presume that it is leaving port, as there is a lighthouse on a headland to the right of the ship, and open sea to the left with other shipping in the distance.
We would date the ship to the 1870s, as with the advent of steam, there were topsail schooners being produced with steam power and these were used for example by Australia, e.g. the SS Bulli and the US Revenue Service.
We can offer no biographical information about the artist, as there are no clues to his identity.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3" matte black frame which suits it very well and it will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size 15 1/4" x 11 3/8" - 38.7cm x 28.85cm
Frame size 21 5/8" x 17 5/8" - 54.9cm x 44.75cm
Medium Oils on canvas
Condition Very good. There are no repairs to the canvas, which is clean and taut. There is one patch of craquelure to the left of the bowsprit and slight stretcher marks consistent with age. There is no paint loss. The frame is new.
