19th C. Oil on Canvas Attributed to C M Powell
This late 18th/early 19th century oil on canvas is attributed to C M Powell 1783-1821, that depicting a coastal scene with fishing boats, masted sailing ships and windmills on the foreshore, in a pierced giltwood frame. Born in Chichester, C M Powell was a self-taught artist, a fact which reflects great credit on him when one considers the beautiful draughtsmanship and ‘professional’ execution of his pictures. Although it is known that he served his apprenticeship as a sailor, it is unclear as to whether or not Powell was ever a member of the Royal Navy. His London exhibits totalled 40, of which twenty-nine were at the Royal Academy and eleven at the British Institution. Nearly all these pictures were true sea pieces. His work is to be found in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
The painting is listed Label verso, meaning Verso which is the Latin for reverse or back of an object. ... When collectors read that a work of art is signed on the Verso, it means that the artist has preferred to sign their work on the back. The image measures 9 ½ in -24.2 cm by 7 ½ in – 19 cm, with frame 13 in – 33 cm by 11 in – 28 cm. This calming and beautifully depicted scene would be a lovely accent and decorators piece for a wide range of rooms and settings.
