19th C. Oil Feeding The Swans At Twilight
We are offering for sale this interesting and well executed Victorian Oil Painting on canvas which appears to be unsigned, although we are unsure where there is a monogram in the lower left hand corner, or just reeds in the river, as it is unclear. The painting depicts a large, timbered, gabled house with barns and outbuildings, situated close to the banks of a river. There is a gate in an old buttressed stone wall, through which has come a servant girl, wearing a mob cap and apron, who is carrying a plate of what may be bread or food of some kind, for the pair of swans that are gliding towards her. There are a row of tall trees along the river bank, some with ivy covered trunks, their branches silhouetted against the pale yellow of the remnants of the setting sun.
Unfortunately, we are unable to offer any biographical information on the artist, only to say that he or she has captured the scene very well, with a great deal of detail.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3" warm gilt frame of relatively plain form, enabling the viewer to concentrate on the content of the painting.
Image size: 27 3/4" x 19 1/4" - 70.5cm x 48.85cm
Frame size: 34 1/8" x 25 5/8" - 86.65cm x 65cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good for its age. There are no repairs to the canvas, no paint loss and the paint is stable. The surface is clean and taut, there are faint stretcher marks and very fine craquelure throughout. The frame is new.
