19th C. Marble Bust of Queen Margherita of Savoy

A rare 19th Century Italian Carrara marble bust of a young Queen Margherita of Savoy (the first Queen of a unified Italy 1851-1926).
A very pretty and decorative marble bust inscribed Margherita, with the youthful Queen depicted wearing Daisies - the emblem of Savoy, as well as other royal and patriotic symbols emphasising her role as a symbolic mother of a newly unified nation.
Finely carved and beautifully sculpted details of the face, hair and costume.
The sculpted white marble bust is on a dark green marble socle base.
Late 19th Century. Unsigned.
The daughter of the Duke of Genoa Ferdinand of Savoy and Elisabeth of Saxony, Margherita Maria Teresa Giovanna (1851-1926) married at the age of seventeen her cousin Umberto, Prince of Piedmont, who in 1878 became King of Italy following the death of her father Victor Emmanuel II. The young woman, who lived in the Turin of the Risorgimento, assumed the role of the first Italian queen with brilliant and impeccable manners even during the most difficult events.
Queen Margherita fostered loyalty toward the monarchy by social and charitable work. She frequently visited and acted as the benefactor of hospitals, schools and institutions for children and the blind, founding the first library for the blind in Florence (1892). By the 1880s she had become the centre of a personal cult as a popular symbol of the Italian monarchy and celebrated by poets and authors, as well as by the press, as a symbol of moral reform.
Height: 42cm / Width: 28cm / Depth: 15cm.
