19th C Grand Tour marble figure of Venus Grand Tour Italian serpentine marble %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This brilliantly hand carved serpentine marble sculpture dates to the mid 19th century and depicts the classical nude figure of Venus lying on a soft bed with flowers by her side. This is an unusual composition and one that I have not seen before and I would feel it is quite rare. It is very finely carved showing fabulous detail throughout. The marble is deep green and black with a mottled grain and the carving has a smooth and lustrous finish.
In very good condition, Italian circa 1860
Height 10cm x width 31cm x depth 12cm
