1970's Oak & Leather Mouseman Stool
1970's Oak & Leather Mouseman Stool
Robert Mouseman Thompson oak Stool with interwoven leather lattice top on four octagonal legs joined by stretchers with good carved mouse signature, climbing up a leg. In excellent, clean and strong condition.
Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson of Kilburn, Yorkshire was a prolific maker of the 1930's producing traditional handcrafted English oak antique furniture. It is claimed that the mouse motif came about accidentally in 1919 following a conversation about "being as poor as a church mouse", which took place between Thompson and one of his colleagues during the carving of a cornice for a screen. This chance remark led to him carving a mouse and this remained part of his work from this point onwards. 'The Mouseman' has since become known as one of the best craftsmen of the 20th century and his family firm of Robert Thompson's Craftsmen Ltd still today manufactures the highest quality English oak antique furniture in Kilburn, using the same traditional techniques and skills.
