18th Century Welsh Oak Storage Press.
This is a wonderful low oak Press Cupboard.
Quite scarce to find now, this one would date to the later years of the 18th Century.
Generally these very practical shelved cupboards, of low to medium height, are thought to have originated in West Wales - Carmarthenshire or Cardiganshire.
The cupboard doors open wide to reveal a large storage space. It has a full depth shelf faced with its original oak moulding, and there is ample capacity for crockery, glassware etc, and both shelf spaces are high enough (34cm & 35cm) to take wine bottles. It is perfect for a dining room or a farmhouse kitchen or as a towel & clothes press for a bedroom - although on a practical note its worth being aware that it is built as one piece, so might be awkward to manoeuvre up narrow cottage staircases.
Hand built frame and panel construction throughout with pegged tenon joints. The doors have a lovely and unusual arrangement each of 4 rectangular raised fielded panels.
The left hand door has 2 wooden turn pegs on the inside to secure it in position. The right hand door has lost its lock but closes firmly in the frame.
The top is of wide boarded polished oak, with a deep moulded cornice. A perfect height and space for displaying pottery, and low enough for mounting a painting behind.
The 3 drawers below are of dovetailed joint construction with their original pine linings.
Wonderful colour and in excellent condition throughout.
The brass handles are old replacements.
