18th Century Reverse Print On Glass wales painting glass
Cymru am byth! This 18th century reverse print on glass depicts an allegory of Wales with a central female subject holding a flag with Price of Wales feathers. A putto kneels to her side holding aloft a crown with a leek on the front to her other side stands a goat. In the background the Welsh hills can be seen in the distance.
This is the work of G. Thompson and J. Evans of 41 Long Lane, Smithfield, London and is dated April 9th 1798.
The glass remains in its original frame and the piece is a very striking and not often seen image.

There is one slight bubble to the left of the subject’s head which appears to have been contemporary to when the print was laid on the glass.

A rare opportunity to acquire a rather splendid Welsh piece. It’s enough to make you want to dig out that Tom Jones CD......
