1868 Elkington Silver Plates Wine Bottle Coaster
We are delighted to offer for sale this rather beautiful Silver Plated Wine Bottle Coaster by Elkington & Co. of Sheffield. The Coaster has a criss cross open basket style surround with a central vacant button in the turned walnut base. The rim has bunches of grapes and vine leaves.
Elkington & Co. are one of the most important names in English Silver and certainly the most important in Silver Plate. George and Henry Elkington were awarded the first patents for electroplating in 1840 and they founded the electroplating industry in Birmingham which spread around the world. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace with enormous success.
The Coaster bears the early Elkington mark of E & Co., crowned and in a shield and bears the date letter F for 1868 as shown. It also has ELKINGTON & CO and the number 3785 and the letter R stamped on the base rim.
Please note that there is a set of four identical bottle coasters, bearing the same date letter as this one, for sale in the United States for over £3,000 and a pair of identical ones in the UK for £725. We found them on google when looking up Elkington date letters.
Diameter of top rim: 8" - 20.25cm
Internal diameter: 4 1/2" - 11.45cm
External diameter of base: 5 1/2" - 13.9cm
Height 2" - 5cm
Weight: 532 g.
Materials: Silver Plate and Walnut
Condition: Very good. The wine coloured baize on the bottom bears some old polish marks but is virtually intact. The walnut is clean and in very good condtion with one small bruise and the silver plate shows no sign of loss.
