1830s Oil Portrait John Strongitharm 1759-1835
We are pleased to offer for sale this superb half length portrait of John Strongitharm, engraver to members of the Royal Family, by an unknown artist. The portrait depicts John, seated in a high backed chair with red upholstery, wearing a black jacket, white waistcoat and white stock. The frame bears a plaque with the sitter's name and dates.
John Strongitharm was born in 1759, the son of John Strongitharm and Ann nee Scortreth of Duke's Place, St. James's. He was apprenticed to the engraver and cartographer John Bayly in 1772, but later set up on his own account as a printmaker, engraver in copperplate and seal engraver. On 16th June 1788, he married Elizabeth Newson (died 7th December 1847), daughter of the late Captain Newson of the Navy.
He traded and presumably lived variously at 39 Dean Street, Soho, London (1780), 127 Pall Mall (1784-93), 1 St. Alban's Street, 13 Pall Mall, 1 Waterloo Place, Pall Mall circa 1806. While at 127 Pall Mall, he was listed as Seal Engraver to H.R.H. The Princes of Wales and later was listed under tradespeople to Queen Adelaide as Seal Engraver while at l Waterloo Place. He is listed in various directories of the period and there is a short biography on the British Museum's website.
He died on the 7th March 1835, and was buried at St. James's Church, Piccadilly, where there is a Memorial Tablet to him in the south vestibule of the Church.
The painting is framed in its original and ornate 3 1/2" swept gilt frame, with more recent 1/4" gilt slip. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Frame size: 36 1/2" x 31 1/2" - 92.7cm x 80cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good. The canvas has been professionally relined in recent years and is in very good condition with no visible craquelure or stretcher marks. The frame is in very good condition consistent with age.
